A secret meeting at the White House

I just finished reading the article "Obama visits Bush at White House for private chat" by David Lightman at MccLatchy Newspapers. Many details were kept secret but they apparently talked about eonomic and national security issues. The two men talked for an hour and five minutes, while Laura Bush gave Michelle Obama a tour of the private residence of the White House. I think that the importance of this is that our president now and our future president, are discussing ways of fixing our countries current situation. What I don't understand is why they didn't say what they talked about. I think that their business is ours, right? Why didn't they tell us? Are they allowed to keep secrets from american citizens? What I also thought was weird was that the White House secretary and the Obama spokesperson didn't say anything about their meeting. Did Obama and Bush not discuss anything important? Or what? I just thought it was interesting that citizens of this country, aren't allowed to know what is going on at the White House.

Cruelty to animals out of our control?

I just read an article titled "Women jailed after pet was placed on phone book that was set ablaze" from the Rocky Mountain News. The article said how Tanya Martin, 38, was arrested without incident and is now in jail for fourth degree arson and cruelty to animals which are both felonies. The yorkshire terrier named BoBo was tied down with speaker wire, then placed on a phone book which was set on fire. A neighbor heard the dog yelping and called 911. Bobo is now recovering in Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. After reading the article I wondered what had the dog done to receive such cruelty? How long is the woman going to be in jail for? Does she need to be in a mental institution? Will she ever get custody of BoBo or will he be put up for adoption? I think that it is good that the law for cruelty to animals has been stiffened, because people who are cruel to animals need a wake up call. This also makes me depressed that people would actually perform these horrible acts of pain on their animals. I don't think that you should be able to take care of someone or something if you are not in your right mind, and you will enflict harm on them. But I supppose that making sure the person is a capable owner would be hard to see and decide. Unfortunatley people in the world today are going to be cruel to their children, animals and their family, but hopefully our laws and punishments will stop some of them.

Library: outdated?

I just read an article by Mr. Fisch titled "No More Librarians". Mr. Fisch commented on Dan Maas's post of coming up with a with a new title for "library." Apparently he doesn't think library is an accurate term because it is no longer based in the media of paper and book. Personally I think that these intelligent people should find something better to do with their time, then coming up with new words for library. Maybe library is an "outdated" term but it is what everyone, at least the United States, uses. So I don't think that we can just switch from saying library to "Scholar Center" no one would know what you were saying if you said "hey I'll meet you at the scholar in residence center." I just think that neither of those terms will catch on, and everyone should just stick with what has worked so far.

Colorado:the swing vote of the election.

I just read an article titled "State Republicans slam Obama, Biden over coal comment". Apparently Biden made a comment that he and Obama do not support "clean coal" plants. Former Gov. Bill Owens and former Congress member Scott McInnis then said that the democrats are too liberal for Colorado and a threat to the state's energy needs, they also called for an "explanation" to voters about where the state's energy is going to come from, since 73% of Colorado's energy needs are met by coal. Biden's campaign immediatly began to backpedal, saying that Biden was only attempting to draw a distinction between the United States and China's outdated technology, and the U.S. should lead by developing better clean-coal methods. After reading the article I thought that Bill Owens and Scott McInnis overreacted and said things just to make Biden look bad. I personally don't really understand politics and I have no idea who I would vote for so I'm glad I can't vote. In the article Owens said that "whoever wins Colorado will be the next president." Since Colorado only has 9 electoral votes I do not think that the election will be determined if McCain wins Colorado or if Obama does. I think that everyone working on both campaign's just needs to watch what they say and think about how other people will take it.

Technology advances us into danger?

I just read an article by Mr. Fisch titled, "Please Help Abby With Her Homework". The article was about Mr. Fisch's daughter, who got an assignment that was to send a notebook around the world to people and they would write things about themselves. Mr. Fisch then asked if people reading his blog would send in things about themselves through wiki. The article made me think about how far the world has come in technology, people no longer write letters they write emails etc... It also made me think how dangerous the world is today. You can find out something about some one, like where they live and stuff, just by going on the internet. Myspace especially is dangerous, I don't have a myspace because I really don't have the time to be on the internet all day. Once school is over I go to swim practice, then go home do my homework eat dinner and then on occasion watch a little t.v. or something. What I'm trying to say is that it isn't hard to look up something about someone over the internet and it isn't hard to ruin someone's or your own reputation over the internet. I think that Mr.Fisch should be more careful about what he posts on his blog since from reading the article I now know where his daughter goes to school, that she's in third grade, and her name is Abby Fisch. Not that anyone will do anything but if some creep reads that and gets that information something bad could happen. I just think Mr. Fisch should be more careful next time.

Math:important or not?

I just finished reading "Why Math?" by Mr.Fisch. It basically said that people should contact someone in the profession they want to go into and ask a series of questions about how math applies to their lives. I think that it is a very good idea, even in my algebra class someone always asks "when will we use this in our lives?" I ,so far, like math it's an easier subject for me. But

I know lots of people struggle with it and want to know why it's relevant to the profession they want to go into. The thing about mathematics is that it's like a building you need a strong foundation before you can build more or in this case learn more. I saw an ad on the Olympics that said that the United States is 21st in math and science behind countries like China, Norway, Canada, etc... I think today, the more math you know will, for the most part, get you more job oppurtunities and better jobs. I think that America, as a country, should focus on catching up to other countries in math and science. Since children in Norway or where ever will get more job oppurtunities and basically take jobs away from people in the U.S. Even here at Arapahoe I only have 4 days a week of math and science and 5 days a week of english and history. Not that the other subjects aren't important, but I think in this day and age math and scienece will provide you with more jobs and get you farther in your career.

Gay man not allowed to press charges

I just read an article titled Gay attack swept under the shrug. The article was about a man who was visting Denver, and was called a "faggot" and punched while in the 16th street mall. The man who was attacked kept his attacker in a headlock until police officers arrived. The big problem is that the police wouldn't allow the victim to press charges. After reading this article I think that this incident will hurt how many people travel to Colorado because they might think our state is against homosexuals and that we violate people's rights. Also what I thought was shocking is that U.S. District judge Zita Weinshienk dismissed the case because no rights were violated, and that gay people are not protected in the Constitution. But doesn't the Constitution protect men? I don't think that people should discriminate against someone because of their sexuality. First of all the attacker judged the victim based on how he was dressed and then punched him, and the victim was merely defending himself. I wish that people would stop discriminating against one another, especially if they are in the legal system, when we stop discriminating the world will be a better place.

Kayne West arrested at LAX

I just read an article titled West Arrested after Airport Row from BBC News. The article said that Kanye West was arrested along with his bodyguard at Los Angeles Airport. Apparently he had just cleared airport security when he was arrested, and that a camera valued at 10,000 dollars had been broken. When I read this article some questions crossed my mind. Why was he arrested? Did the camera belong to him? And why was his bodyguard arrested? I also think that celebrities today think that they are untouchable, like nothing will go wrong because they have alot of money and fame. Personally I would like to find out why Kanye West was arrested before I judge him, but I hope this is a wake up call for him and other celebs.
